Time to Take OUT The Garbage!

Having discussed Antibiotics and You in our previous post, and the conditions that result as a bi-product of intaking those Antibiotics, I thought it would be important to help you fully understand the ramifications of having taken the antibiotics and the main resulting condition, and then, how to heal yourself of its effects.  I will pick up where we left off.

When one takes an Antibiotic, it causes an imbalance within the digestive flora (healthy bacteria) that naturally occurs in your Intestinal System.  What results from this imbalance is the body now tries to function without the vital component of bacteria that is necessary for the normal digestion and assimilation of your food material.  This of course will lead to improper digestion.  Let’s face it.  If you can't digest your food properly, you can't expect your body to be healthy.  This is similar to your car not running properly if your gas filter is clogged.  Along the same lines, a person can put the highest quality food in their body, but if the filters for absorbing the vital nutrients are dirty, clogged or aren't functioning properly, the same issue will occur. The body will malfunction and have poor health. Another possibility is a person could have clean filters yet eat poor quality food; they too will develop health issues.  It all comes back to digesting, absorbing and assimilating the proper ingredients in a balanced, healthy fashion.  Without this, you will develop health problems from deficiencies in nutrition and lead a miserable existence.  And if you don't know this to be true yet, ask someone with health problems and see what you learn.  You'll find them to be miserable.  But this misery is not necessary.
To fully appreciate this, know that the health of your physical body stems from two components.  First you need to eat high quality foods with all the natural components created from natural sources. Not the man-made, Completely Refined And Processed (aka CRAP foods) foods that have been artificially "Enriched" foods most consume in today's society.  Second, you'll need to have properly functioning digestion and elimination systems in order for all of it to work properly so you can be healthy.  Without the first part, you'll lack the necessary building blocks for good, strong and healthy function.  And without the second part, you can't expect the body to be able to process those vital ingredients and give you the health they would naturally create.  It is because of the second part of this equation (properly functioning digestion and elimination), and the health imbalances that are so pervasive in our country, that I want to teach you about your assimilation and elimination systems.
To assimilate your food in a proper way, it requires the full breakdown within the digestive tract and then the absorption of those food particles into the bloodstream.  As mentioned, if this part of the assimilation doesn't occur, the rest of the system is irrelevant.  Having discussed the condition of Dysbiosis, or lack of balanced digestive flora, in a past issue entitled, "Sugar and Your Immune System,"  please refer to that previous issue available through the "Search" option my website for this information.  If Dysbiosis occurs, resulting in incomplete breakdown of your proteins, the absorption of those improperly digested proteins will cause the Immune System to attack them which leads to food allergies.  The resultant toxins associated with the Immune response generated will then head to the Liver for final breakdown.

What This Means To You
The Liver is the second most important organ in the body, after the Kidneys.  The Liver is responsible for determining what the body needs and what the body should eliminate.  It's like the head foreman on a job.  It oversees all the flow within the body and makes sure all gets processed appropriately and in a timely fashion.  If the body is constantly taking in toxins through the Digestive System, whether they be from processed food, too many medications or alcohol, or the incomplete breakdown as a result of the Dysbiosis mentioned above, the Liver will begin to get overwhelmed and the body will now begin to develop health problems.  Conditions like Arthritis, Vision Problems, Headaches, Elevated Cholesterol, Inflammatory Conditions, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and others.  It is because of these conditions, and the importance of the Liver in completing the millions of functions it does every day, that it becomes vital for you to have a clean and properly functioning Liver.

The Kidneys, the most important organ in the body, helps to regulate fluid and electrolyte balance.  This is necessary for proper completion of normal metabolic pathways and vital for normal Blood Pressure.  Making sure you keep your Kidney's properly flushed by consuming balanced amounts of water throughout the day is vital to keep the Kidneys free of toxins.  One quart of water for every 50 lbs. every day is recommended to keep the Kidney's clean.  If this organ gets overrun with toxins and/or doesn't have enough of the proper ingredients for balanced function, conditions of High Blood Pressure, Heart Palpitations, Dehydration, Low Back Pain and Fluid Retention/Swelling can develop.  These are reasons why it is important to keep the Kidneys clean and functioning properly.

Already mentioned in passing when discussing the condition of Dysbiosis, the Large Intestine is important when eliminating the toxins from the body.  Since the Kidneys help with the fluid toxins, the Large Intestine handles the solid ones.  If Dysbiosis exists within the Intestinal System, the body will have a hard time eliminating its solid wastes properly.  Conditions such as Constipation, Diarrhea, Irritable Bowel, Diverticulitis, Colitis, Sciatica and Low Back Pain can all occur as a result.  And if the Large Intestine is out of balance, as mentioned previously, the body can begin absorbing toxins into the bloodstream which then go to the Liver.  This is why it's vital to make sure the Large Intestine part of your elimination system is balanced and properly functioning.
The next organ that helps the body eliminate toxins and is vital for normal health and function are the Lungs.  The Lungs help to process all the air that we breathe, and acts to filter out the toxins and pollutants within the air.  Living in a major metropolitan area where we breathe in pollution on a daily basis, or even considering the outgasing that occurs from new construction and carpeting, we are all constantly exposed to toxins in the air that we breathe.  Getting away from these by taking hikes out in the woods on a regular basis is a good start for helping to eliminate these toxins. But even this may not be enough.  Lung Conditions such as Asthma, Upper Respiratory Infections, Ear Infections, Tonsillitis, Pneumonia, or Bronchitis are all related to the improper elimination of the toxins we breathe. Taking the time to regularly get outside and deeply breathing in fresh air is vital for your health.  Fully breathing into your belly helps to accomplish this, as most people breathe improperly by breathing through their chest instead.  This is something else to consider when improving the functioning of your Respiratory System.  And again, keeping your Lungs clean and highly functioning is vital for your health.

Last, but certainly not least, the largest organ of the body and one that is involved in your body's elimination system is the Skin.  The Skin is something we all take for granted unless you already have a problem with yours.  Normal sweating and exposing your Skin to sunlight helps to process toxins out of the Skin.  If the Skin has problems eliminating toxins, you can be sure the other four organs are already overrun with toxins themselves.  This is because the Skin is the body's last priority.  In other words, the body has other organs/glands that are needed to function in a balanced way more so then the skin.  It is designed to protect us, helps to produce vitamin D, and it breathes just like the Lungs do.  Conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema, Dandruff, Rosacea, Hives etc. are all an indication that the Skin is overwhelmed with eliminating toxins.  This is because the other four organs involved in eliminating wastes are usually out of balance already.  Making sure your Skin is healthy is an indication of how the rest of your elimination systems are functioning.  If the skin is off, the others are definitely off too.

Antibiotics and You

Have you ever taken Antibiotics?
Either as a child for the litany of childhood illnesses or as an adult for upper respiratory infections or as a prophylactic before a dental visit?
Are you aware that antibiotics are used in a variety of foods or in the animals that serve as food sources for us humans?
Did you know that because of this over exposure to antibiotics at this alarming rate, the imbalance we are left with is contributing to several common health issues?
Common conditions such as Low Energy, Cravings for sweets, breads, pastas, juices, etc., Weight gain, Indigestion, Colitis, Diverticulitis, High Blood Pressure, Heart burn, High Cholesterol, High Triglycerides, Gas/Bloating, Mood swings, Hormone Imbalances, Difficulty Sleeping/Restless sleep, Loss of Libido, Arthritis and the list goes on.  When you stop to think about it, it makes you wonder what we are doing to our health and our lives by taking this commonly prescribed treatment.  If you consider the days of work lost and the money spent to deal with treating these resulting conditions, it's amazing to consider the cost to our society.
Antibiotics are necessary, as is surgery, during extreme conditions.  But to consider Antibiotic treatment as an initial intervention for many childhood infections is definitely not ideal for these reasons
1. Antibiotic will suppress the child's Immune System.  That alone is reason enough.
Consider the following:  Our Immune Systems develop based on exposure to various pathogens, from the infinite different bacteria, viruses, virons and parasites we are exposed to on a daily basis.  When exposed to these pathogens, the Immune System will produce specific cells called Memory Immune Cells that are designed to recognize future exposures to the pathogen.  These cells assist the body by identifying the pathogens and allowing for a faster response to the pathogen, rather then creating a brand new response with each new exposure.  The initial Memory Immune Cells then help stimulate the creation of other Attack Immune Cells that are designed to attack and destroy the pathogen.  This is very similar to a war occurring within the body, and part of the Immune Response can result in the body producing a fever- a natural healthy response when the body is becoming deficient in Calcium and the Whole Vitamin C Complex.  The fever is designed to raise the body temperature to assist in destroying the pathogen.  It stimulates the cells that eat the infection known as phagocytes.  The phagocytes wouldn't need any stimulation if it weren't for a Vitamin C deficiency.  So this only occurs after the blood reserves of Calcium and Vitamin C are too low.  The youngster that's got plenty of diffusible calcium in the body fluids and sufficient Whole Vitamin C Complex is practically immune to children's diseases.   A child with a fever tells you they are deficient in Calcium Lactate and the Whole Vitamin C Complex.  Refined foods have lost these important ingredients, and eating refined sugar depletes the Immune System’s ability to have a normal response due to the loss of the important mineral Calcium and the Whole Vitamin C Complex.
2.   Antibiotics destroy bacteria.  All bacteria.  This means Antibiotics destroy not only the bad bacteria that create infection, but also the good bacteria the body needs for maintaining normal function digestively.  Since the digestive tract has millions of different bacteria that assist in digesting our food, destroying these necessary bacteria will result in disrupting a person’s ability to digest there food.  And if you can't digest and assimilate your food properly, you can't expect a person to grow and heal efficiently, if at all.  This imbalance will lead to all the various symptoms and conditions mentioned in the opening paragraph.  That's why it is absolutely necessary to take a Probiotic with each meal.  Exposure to Antibiotics, knowingly and unknowingly in several of our food sources, requires each of us to take Probiotics every time we eat.  We recommend UFP Capsules from Metagenics for your Probiotic needs.
I have had this debate several times with different patients over the years.  The concern for the prophylactic Antibiotic recommended before a person has their teeth worked on.  It is said that the Antibiotics are necessary for the prevention of damage to a person's heart valves from unnecessary bacterial infection as a result of bleeding gums during dental work.  My question is, Where does the bacteria come from that creates these blood borne infections leading to heart valve problems?  Certainly anything in the person's mouth before the dental visit is already there naturally.  And consider the fact that if people brush their teeth regularly, any bacteria within the mouth will already enter the bloodstream, especially if the person's gums bleed during the brushing.  (The bleeding gums are an indication of a Vitamin P deficiency.  Vitamin P is a portion of the Whole Vitamin C Complex and is responsible for strengthening the capillaries.  Therefore if your gums bleed during brushing your teeth, you'll want to take some Cyruta Plus from Standard Process, a natural supplement that supplies extra amounts of Vitamin P.)  So if the body is continually exposed to these bacteria that already occur in the mouth, what else during a dental visit will create a different type of bacteria the body isn't used to that causes the Heart issue?  It would have to come from the dental equipment.  But if the dental equipment is sterilized between each use, as I'm certain that it is, then there would be no reason to worry about possible infection.  And therefore no need for the prophylactic Antibiotics before your dental visit.  Something to consider and certainly discuss before your next dental visit.
To strengthen the bodies Memory Immune System requires a person to strengthen their Parotid Gland, a salivary gland found on both sides of the upper jaw.  The Parotid Gland produces saliva that consists of several different chemical identifiers and messengers designed to tell the Enteric Nervous System what is coming down the Digestive Tract.  The Enteric Nervous System is like a second brain that lines and regulates what the digestive tract lets into the bloodstream.  It produces an abundant amount of Immune Cells designed to prevent infection from getting into the bloodstream through the Digestive Tract.  Therefore, a strong Parotid Gland is necessary to prepare your Digestive System for what it will be asked to digest, along with the Enteric Nervous System for what it will be needing to regulate into the body, for the purposes of normal health and function.  People who eat too fast, don't chew their food enough and have a history of sickness will usually have a deficiency in their Parotid Gland functioning.  Parotid PMG from Standard Process usually helps repair and restore balance to this very important gland.

My Recommendation To You
If you, your spouse or your child(ren) have knowingly been exposed to Antibiotic treatment and the practitioner who prescribed them has not recommended a Probiotic to go along with it, you'll want to come into the office and get some.  Please keep in mind that for every week you are on an Antibiotic, you'll need 9 to 12 months of Probiotic to help replace what was lost.  And considering that we consume Antibiotics in many of the refined natural foods such as milk and many of our meat products, you should really be on a Probiotic with every meal for life.  We'll also want to consider checking for the need of Calcium Lactate and Cataplex C, both from Standard Process.   These will assist the body in strengthening the Immune System and its response to infection.  And if you experience any of the above conditions mentioned and want to help to eliminate those, I would strongly recommend doing the Doctor Supervised Detoxification Program.  This is a 3 week program designed to help eliminate all the accumulated toxins in your colon and the rest of your body from the imbalances left after taking Antibiotics.  The benefits of such a program are assisting in the elimination of all the conditions listed in the opening paragraph.  Cleaning out your body of all of your toxins will be the first step to restoring balance to your body and all of its systems.  And with the environment we live in being filled with toxins, this is necessary for anyone who truly wants to be healthy.

My Offer To You
If you have a history of Antibiotic intake, take advantage of the opportunity to come into the office and have me check you for the Antibiotic Imbalance.  This evaluation can be included in your next regularly scheduled office visit.  Normally this evaluation costs $100.00, but through the end of April, I will give it to you for FREE!  That's right, FREE through the end of April.  So call the Office NOW and tell us to schedule you for the Antibiotic Imbalance.  Since Spring will be here in 2 weeks, the sooner you do this the sooner you can get ready for Detoxifying Your Whole Body.  Call (845) 561-BACK (2225) and schedule the Antibiotic Imbalance TODAY!

As always I am here to help.

How to Maintain Vital Qi for a Healthy Kidney

Like physical machines, the human body consists of different units that have to be properly maintained for proper functioning. Take the example of a car; the engine and gearbox are some of its parts that must be properly maintained if it’s to function well. For the human body, it’s the organs such as the heart, kidney, lungs, and more that are crucial for the general functioning of the body. If these organs aren’t properly taken care of, the other parts of the body won’t function either.
Although there are many several organs, this article focuses on taking care of the kidney.
Humans have a pair of kidneys that help remove waste products from blood. Kidneys are the organs that control the level of body fluids and electrolytes as well as producing red blood cells. They also regulate blood pressure and fluid levels within the large intestine. With the human body made up of approximately 75% of water, the kidney thus plays a very crucial role in ensuring that all other organs get safe fluids.
For a healthy kidney, we have to maintain the natural energy known as the Vital Qi. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the kidney contains all that natural energy, also referred to as life force. A healthy kidney therefore means having full Vital Qi.
The question that arises is: How can one take care of the Vital Qi or restore it in case it has been reduced?
Before anything, you must first ensure that you take a proper diet. It’s by getting the right nutrients that you’ll be able to replenish your Vital Qi. Eating good food should be guided by a professional diet that consists of natural foods devoid of artificial preservatives and sweeteners. It’s important to note that the kidney is very much affected when you eat foods with artificial chemicals since it’s the organ charged with cleaning the blood and ensuring that every body fluid is cleaned for consumption by other body parts. When you eat foods that have additives and extensively processed, you end up eating into your Vital Qi instead of adding to it.
Besides natural foods, it’s also important to take the right amount of fluids. Maintaining the right amount of water in the body is paramount for a healthy kidney. Water will help in clearing of wastes that have been extracted from the blood by the kidney. In a case where one doesn’t drink enough water, even the color of urine becomes darker since it’s concentrated with wastes. Most people don’t take note of their fluid intake during the cold season. It’s this season that most people don’t feel the need to drink water, ending up having low water in the body. However, the cold season is the right season to take a lot of water to ensure that water lost when the system is trying to keep the body warm is replenished. It’s also during this season that metabolism increases, resulting in use of more water. As such, you must ensure that you drink the right amount of water daily, whether you have the urge to drink it or not.
The amount of water you drink should be proportionate to your body weight and your level of activity. There are several reasons why you need to drink enough of water. By drinking too much water, you may suffer from hyponatremia, also called water intoxication. Hyponatremia is as a result of having so much water in the system that the level of sodium or salt in the body is diluted to dangerous levels. There have been several cases where hyponatremia has led to death.
Well, what’s the right amount of water then? The simplest way to go about it is by multiplying your body weight by two thirds. The answer you get is the amount of water in ounces you need to drink every day. However, for someone who’s working out, you’ll need to add some extra amount of water since you lose a lot of water during physical exercises. It’s advisable that you add 12 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of extensive exercise. Ensuring the right amount of water helps your kidney and provides a good platform for metabolism.
Many people find it a challenge drinking the right amount of water. Some only drink water when they feel the urge to drink. The problem is that drinking water only when there is an urge may mean that you don’t get enough amount of water. As such, many people have their bodies used to lower amounts of water, but this can be changed gradually by increasing the amount of water you take. Your kidney too will adjust to that right amount of water and it will function much better. Because some problems may be as a result of dehydration, tuning to more water intake will eventually result in better functioning of your kidney and subsequently improved health.
There are several symptoms associated with kidney malfunction or stress. These include joint and back pain as well as ringing sound in the ear. The muscles around the hip and those of the neck are directly associated with your kidneys and are thus likely to be affected in case you’re having issues with your Vital Qi.
If your kidney isn't functioning well, you can have a number of symptoms that include dread, general body weakness, confusion, increasing blood pressure, and more. The strongest emotional feeling that’s associated with weakening kidneys is increased fear, something that can adversely affect one’s willpower. When living in fear, the problems don’t just remain emotional, but end up affecting one’s general lifestyle and weakening the body functions, including Nervous System and Immune System.
In addition to proper nutrition and drinking of enough water, there are other things you can do to support your kidney so as to maintain a good Vital Qi. One of the available ways is the use of supplements, which help to provide your body with the right building blocks that will better its functions. There are supplements that help kidneys function properly and restore Vital Qi. Standard Process has availed Renafood, which is a supplement that helps the kidney to maintain a well rounded function. The same pharmaceutical company also has another supplement called Renatrophin PMG, which is prescribed for those whose kidneys have already been damaged. The supplement helps the kidney rebuild itself. This is because the supplement provides the right nutrients to help the kidney do just that.
One can also decide to use herbals. There are numerous companies across the globe, providing supplements specifically for the kidney. Mediherb is one of the companies that supply these herbs and is one of the companies that maintain the highest of standard in the extraction and packaging of the herbals.
If you suspect that you are having kidney problems, it’s advisable to first go for a check-up before picking any of the supplements or herbs. This is important since a physician would diagnose you and recommend the right treatment.

If you have any questions about your kidney and restoring your Qi, contact Dr. Ric Huntoon at (845) 561-2225.

How to Prevent High Blood Pressure

Whether old, young, or anywhere in between, high blood pressure is something to be wary about. It has several risks associated with it. Having high blood pressure is a recipe for possible heart conditions that may be fatal. It’s therefore important to take the requisite steps to ensure that you maintain an optimal blood pressure that will help keep heart diseases at bay.
If you aren’t an expert yourself, it’s important to get a professional program to help you control your blood pressure. You can get that from a holistic chiropractor.

Things to Do To Prevent High Blood Pressure
Understanding the risks associated with high blood pressure, there isn’t a thing as good as taking action to control your blood pressure so that it doesn’t exceed the optimal levels. It doesn’t matter what your age is, you can always do something about your blood pressure so that you avoid falling victim.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
1.   Watch what you eat – Many problems stem from having poor diet. High blood pressure is one of the health issues that you can develop if you don’t maintain a balanced diet. You’ll need to eat fruits, whole foods, and lots of vegetables. On the other hand, you should avoid foods that have a lot of fat and bad cholesterol. You should also avoid adding a lot of sodium to your food. When buying food, it’s important to take note the amount of sodium contained therein so that you don’t take too much of it.

2.   Whatch your weight - There are many who don’t give much thought to how much they weigh. This is even so with people who’re living sedentary lives. However, maintaining a good weight is a good step towards reducing the risk of high blood pressure. If you feel that you have too much weight, you should make a point of shedding it off.

How do you know the optimal weight for your body? What you need to know is your body mass index (BMI). You can easily visit a doctor to help you ascertain your BMI and to see whether you have any excess weight that you need to lose. The doctor may also carry out some physical measurements around your waist to determine if you have any excess fat that should be trimmed down. If you have your body weight and height, you can easily calculate your BMI using the BMI calculator on the CDC website. If you find that you’re overweight or obese, you’ll need to start a process of cutting down on your weight so as to avoid running into the risks of high blood pressure.
3.   Engage in Physical Exercise – Physical activity helps you cut down calories and cholesterol, helping your body system to work properly. This helps you reduce the risk of high blood pressure. It’s recommended that you get some physical activity every week. If you can maintain 30 minutes of physical exercise for at least 5 days of the week, you are heading on the right direction. Where possible, you can consult with a fitness expert to help you design a fitness plan that will work best for you based on your weight.
4.   Avoid smoking – Medical experts have found out that smoking has a negative effect on your body. Smoking has the potential of causing damage to your blood vessels and lead to faster hardening of your arteries. Continuing to smoke even after developing such problems may lead to heart disease or even stroke. For someone who isn’t already smoking, it’s good not to go into the habit. If you’ve been smoking, you’ll need to stop to ensure that you don’t develop high blood pressure. You can visit the CDC website for more information on how you can quit, especially for someone who’s been smoking for a while.
5.   Control your alcohol intake – Alcohol intake isn’t that bad. However, it has to be done in moderation. Taking too much alcohol is dangerous for your health. Besides other health issues associated with too much alcohol, it will also have negative impact on your blood pressure, possibly resulting in high blood pressure.

Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly
High blood pressure is also referred to as the silent killer. That’s because there aren’t any evident symptoms that one can experience. You therefore have to regularly check your blood pressure alongside the other measures such as physical activity and diet. There are devices you can use at home to monitor your blood pressure. Nevertheless, if you don’t have such a device, you can go to a health center or a pharmacy where you can get such service. In case your Adrenal glands are overworked, you’ll start having issues with your blood pressure. Adrenal glands are responsible for controlling blood pressure. To avoid having them overworked, you can have whole food supplements. These can be prescribed by a professional.

Taking Preventive Measures and Treating Conditions
There are several health conditions that may also lead to high blood pressure. If not managed, the end result may be high blood pressure, having the possibility of causing other problems. For example, those who suffer from diabetes have a higher risk of suffering from high blood pressure. In such a case, it’s important to manage the condition to avoid running into other problems.
If you already have blood pressure, you can get medication. This will help you manage your condition as you take other relevant measures. Even if you have an idea of the drugs to take for blood pressure, it’s still important to get the advice of a doctor since drugs react differently with different people.
Whether you’re getting the services of a doctor or taking the alternative approach of a holistic chiropractor, you must ensure that you follow the professional advice to the letter. This will include regularly checking on your blood pressure and ensuring that you carry out the necessary measures to have it in the optimal levels.
When it comes to issues of high blood pressure, it’s better to ensure a complete lifestyle change to better your blood pressure and cardiovascular health. It’s much better than taking prescription medicine that may react negatively with your body. For someone with good health, it’s better not to risk falling victim of blood pressure. This can be achieved by taking the requisite dietary and fitness measures.
If you have any questions on preventing high blood pressure, contact Dr. Ric Huntoon at (845) 561-2225.
